Under the Same Sky – Encounters in the Wild
Ilkka Niskanen, Photographer
21.5.2026–2.1.2027
I am an Iisalmi-based photographer. I have always considered nature to be more than a mere subject; it is a part of me. My journey behind the camera, now spanning more than 30 years, has taught me above all to relate to nature with the deepest respect and apply patience towards my subjects. The significance of nature in my work has grown from year to year, and the peace that nature provides has become the very soul of my photography. To me, photography is a way to attain the inexhaustible inspiration and tacit strength constantly made available to us by the surrounding world.
The works in this exhibition arise from the insight that there are wonders everywhere – they may await close by in the familiar milieus, or deep in the serenity of the pristine wilderness. It is not the distance that is of the essence but having the presence of mind to halt and see.
My photography sessions tend to be lonely and quiet, and yet my works have found their way onto the international scene. The recognition I have gained for my work includes three honorary titles: MFIAP (Master Photographer of FIAP), MNFFF/g (Master of photography, Nordiska Förbundet För Fotografi, distinction “gold”) and HonSKsLE (honorary eminent photographer of the Association of Finnish Camera Societies). The titles also convey my passion for and commitment to this art form.

Each photograph in the exhibition is a record of a moment that can neither be commissioned nor owned. The photographs are gifts where every encounter, under the same sky, is a unique token of trust. In these instants, the human is merely a silent visitor to the animal milieu; an observer permitted to stop by for a fleeting moment.
When the camera shutter clicks, it is not just about light and shade – it is also about mutual observation. During this micro-moment, a wild animal gaze meets the lens, and the creature and the photographer acknowledge each other as living beings under the same infinite sky. The exhibition invites you to stop and reflect these unique moments.

WOLVERINE
Of all the creatures that live in our northern nature, the wolverine counts among the more mysterious ones. It roams tirelessly over an extensive territory that may encompass hundreds of kilometres of wilderness. It goes its own ways, often completely out of sight, never settling down in any one place.
Although the wolverine is a loner by nature and prefers to live in solitude far from human habitation, its essence is characterised by a fascinating contradiction: it is a very curious species, as is typical of mustelids, inclined to observe its surroundings by stopping to sniff the air or examine the tracks of a passerby.
These photographs capture moments in the life of this mystical beast that simultaneously is a strong survivor and a playful explorer. The wolverine is a forest shadow that appears out of nowhere and vanishes back into silence just as quickly.

BEAR
The bear is the undisputed majesty of the forests of Finland. Yet its inherent nature is full of intriguing contrasts. The bear roams silently in the wilderness, and despite its massive size, it is capable of moving through the densest spruce forest almost without a sound. The presence of a bear can often be sensed before the animal ever appears in sight – a calming yet awe-inspiring force.
Nevertheless, the most profound essence of a bear is often revealed when the animal thinks it is all alone. In those moments, the bear’s playful nature comes out. The bear may wrestle on tussocks with its siblings, nimbly climb up trees or stop to examine a tree stump with child-like enthusiasm. These photographs showcase a bear that is not just a formidable beast but also a curious and joyful creature.

WOLF
The wolf is an animal that invokes a reaction in everyone. It is one of the mightiest symbols of our nature, one that arouses strong emotions – awe, admiration, often also deep-rooted fear and hatred. Oftentimes this intelligent predator is feared without cause. In reality, the wolf is a timid and family-oriented animal whose life is guided by strong ties to the pack and precise social rules. It is a close observer of the wilderness, one that prefers to avoid contact with humans.
In this series of photographs, the wolf comes out of the shadows and shows its true self. This is a reminder of wild beauty that deserves its place in our forests without unnecessarily being considered an object of fear.
